Definition of quakie in English:
Quaking aspen (see aspen).
- Quakie is a white wood, relatively soft and light to carry when dry.
- As my sister and I grew, my dad didn't mark the passing of time with a calendar or clock; he marked it by the change in color of the quakie leaves, by the spring thawing of winter ice, and by the arrival of deer and doves to their winter range as they moved south late in the year.
- A young quakie growing in a thick grove often cannot meet the competition from its big relatives, so it gives up early, leaving a curled up stalk ranging from an inch to two in diameter and quite uniform.
