Entry from British & World English dictionary
noun[mass noun] Archaeology
An ancient script of hieroglyphic signs found on wooden tablets on Easter Island. The symbols have not yet been deciphered.
- Some of those remain undecipherable, like Rongorongo, found on Easter Island, and Indus, the writing of the ancient people of what are now Pakistan and India.
- But the biggest challenge awaiting Whitehead and her team is Rongorongo, the as-yet-undeciphered writing system unique to the ancient civilisations of Easter Island off the coast of Chile.
- The islanders carved and erected the stone statues, produced many other arts and crafts and developed Rongorongo, the only written language in Oceania.
Early 20th century: a local word.
