Semmelweis, Ignaz Philipp

Pronunciation: /ˈseməlˌvīs/
(1818–65), Hungarian obstetrician; Hungarian name Ignác Fülöp Semmelweis. He discovered the infectious character of puerperal fever and advocated rigorous cleanliness and the use of antiseptics by doctors examining patients.
