(also shepherd moon)
A small moon orbiting close to a planetary ring, especially of Saturn, and whose gravitational field confines the ring within a narrow band.
- For one thing, the particles in some of the rings are corralled into narrow bands by the so-called shepherd moons: teeny satellites that orbit near the rings.
- Atlas and other moons exist outside the main ring system, as do the two F ring shepherd moons, Prometheus and Pandora.
