A taxonomic category that ranks above class and below phylum.
- There are three taxa conventionally included: the Onychophora (velvet worms, which do not posses an exoskeleton, and were previously considered a distinct phylum), and the superclasses Myriapoda and Hexapoda.
- The superclass Hexapoda includes so-called true insects and several classes of primitive wingless proto-insects.
