An industrial city and river port in southwestern Russia, on the Volga River; population 705,500 (est. 2008). Former name (until 1964) Stavropol. Russian name Tolyatti.

Origin

Renamed in 1964 after Palmiro Togliatti (1893–1964), leader of the Italian Communist Party.
