A state of equilibrium in which a small disturbance will produce a large change.
- Instead of exerting the usual restoring force that tries to resist deformation, materials with a negative stiffness draw on the energy stored in their unstable equilibrium state to help the deformation proceed faster.
- Solid portions of the curve represent locally stable equilibria whereas dashed portions of the curve represent unstable equilibria.
