Woodward, Robert Burns

Pronunciation: /ˈwo͝odwərd/
(1917–79), US organic chemist. He was the first to synthesize quinine, cholesterol, chlorophyll, and vitamin B12, and with Roald Hoffmann (1937-), a US chemist, born in Poland, discovered symmetry-based rules governing the course of rearrangement reactions involving cyclic intermediates. Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1965).
