  • refute or deny?The core meaning of refute is ‘prove (a statement or theory) to be wrong’, as in attempts to refute Einstein's theory. In the second half of the 20th century, a sense developed in which refute is treated as synonymous with deny, as in I absolutely refute the charges made against me, where no evidence or argument to show that the charges are untrue is given. Traditionalists object to the second use, but it is now widely accepted in standard English.
