( 1832–98), English writer; pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He wrote the children’s classics Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1871), which were inspired by Alice Liddell, the young daughter of the dean at the Oxford college where Carroll was a mathematics lecturer.
