  • (1920–65), king of Egypt, reigned 1936–52. Farouk’s defeat in the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1948, together with the general corruption of his reign, led to a military coup in 1952, masterminded by Nasser. Farouk was forced to abdicate in favour of his infant son, Fuad.
