Definition of Gobelins in English:

A tapestry and textile factory in Paris, established by the Gobelin family circa 1440 and taken over by the French Crown in 1662. It was highly successful in the late 17th and 18th centuries, when designs by leading French painters were used, and tapestry panels became used as alternatives to oil paintings.
