An industrial city of Ukraine, on the Dnieper River; population 781,600 (est. 2009). It developed as a major industrial centre after the construction of a hydroelectric dam in 1932. Russian name Zaporozhye /zəpaˈrɔʒje/. Former name (until 1921) Aleksandrovsk.
