Angola

Pronunciation: /aŋˈɡəʊlə/
A republic on the west coast of southern Africa; population 12,799,300 (est. 2009); languages, Portuguese (official), Bantu languages; capital, Luanda.

Angola was a Portuguese possession from the end of the 16th century until it achieved independence in 1975. Independence was followed by years of civil war between the ruling Marxist MPLA and the UNITA movement; this was halted by the signing of a ceasefire in 2002.
