1A state in the north-eastern US, on the Atlantic coast; capital, Hartford; population 3,501,252 (est. 2008). It was one of the original thirteen states of the Union and ratified the draft US Constitution in 1788.
2The longest river in New England, rising in northern New Hampshire and flowing south for 655 km (407 miles) to enter Long Island Sound.
