Surgical dressing consisting of a thickness of cotton wool between two layers of gauze.
- On returning home she attempted to light a cigarette and her gamgee eye pad ignited.
- The gamgee or cotton wool padding should be applied over the top of this layer, and secured in place with a conforming cotton bandage.
Late 19th century: named after Joseph S. Gamgee (1828–86), English surgeon.
