( Fl. c.1570), legendary American Indian chief; the name means “He Makes Rivers.” A member of the Mohawk tribe, he is credited with establishing the Five Nations League, an Iroquois confederacy comprising the Onondaga, Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga, and Seneca tribes. His name was used for the hero of Longfellow’s narrative poem The Song of Hiawatha.
