Hindemith, Paul

Pronunciation: /ˈhɪndəmɪt/
(1895–1963), German composer. A leading figure in the neoclassical trend which began in the 1920s and an exponent of Gebrauchsmusik (‘utility music’), he believed that music should have a social purpose. Notable works: Mathis der Maler (opera, 1938).
