Definition of kish in English:
A scum of impure graphite, formed on molten iron during smelting.
- In a hypereutectic gray iron, solidification begins with the precipitation of kish graphite in the melt.
- Carbon and irons with a greater carbon content will (under suitable conditions) start freezing by throwing out kish graphite of large size.
- Fumes and kish (graphite flakes from the carbon saturated hot metal) are emitted from the vessel's mouth and collected by the pollution control system.
Early 19th century: of uncertain origin; compare with French dialect quiasse 'scum on metal' (French chiasse 'insect excrement').
