A large African monitor lizard.
- Genus Varanus, family Varanidae: the water leguan or Nile monitor, and V. exanthematicus, which lives in burrows in savannah and semi-desert habitats
- We have a vacant plot next to our house and since the grass has caught up to a 6 foot wall, we are experiencing housebreaking, snakes, leguaans and scorpions.
- This experience adds to a list of animals seen in and from our garden over the years: small grey mongooses, leguaans, spotted genets, and bushbuck.
Late 18th century: from Dutch, probably from French l'iguane 'the iguana'.
