Nobel, Alfred Bernhard

Pronunciation: /nəʊˈbɛl/
(1833–96), Swedish chemist and engineer. He invented dynamite (1866), gelignite, and other high explosives, making a large fortune which enabled him to endow the prizes that bear his name.
