Pickering, William Hayward

Pronunciation: /ˈpɪkərɪŋ/
(1910–2004), New Zealand-born American engineer, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology 1954–76. During his directorate the laboratory launched America’s first satellite, Explorer I (1958), and several unmanned probes to the moon and planets.
