South East Asia Treaty Organization

(abbreviation SEATO)
A defence alliance which existed between 1954 and 1977 for countries of SE Asia and part of the SW Pacific, to further a US policy of containing Communism. Its members were Australia, Britain, France, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and the US.
