Telford, Thomas

Pronunciation: /ˈtɛlfəd/
(1757–1834), Scottish civil engineer. He built hundreds of miles of roads, more than a thousand bridges (including the Menai suspension bridge 1819–26), and a number of canals, including the Caledonian Canal across Scotland (opened 1822).
