The portion of an ovum opposite the animal pole, containing most of the yolk and little cytoplasm.
- One end of the egg, the animal pole, which sits uppermost, has a heavily pigmented surface, whereas most of the yolk is located toward the opposite end, the vegetal pole, which is unpigmented.
