Wöhler, Friedrich

Pronunciation: /ˈvəːlə/
Pronunciation: /ˈvøːlɐ/
(1800–82), German chemist. His synthesis of urea from ammonium cyanate in 1828 demonstrated that organic compounds could be made from inorganic compounds. He was also the first to isolate the elements aluminium and beryllium.
