Adding endings to words that end in a double ‘l’

You need to drop the final l from words that end with a double l before adding endings that begin with a consonant (e.g. -ment, -ful, and -ly):

install instalment
skill skilful
chill chilly

The ending -ness is an exception to this rule:

small smallness
ill illness
