Adding -ly

The ending -ly is often added to adjectives and nouns to form adverbs and adjectives, for example:

slow, slowly

week, weekly

endless, endlessly

If you're adding -ly to an adjective that ends in a single consonant plus -le, then you need to drop the -e and just add a -y:

gentle, gently

single, singly

terrible, terribly
