What is the origin of the word ‘hazard’?
The word hazard, meaning ‘a danger or risk’ is taken from Old French, although the origin of the French word is uncertain. It is potentially of Arabic origin as, according to William of Tyre (the medieval chronicler), the same name was given to a dice game allegedly invented during the siege of a castle called Hasart or Asart in Palestine, and thus named after it, although early evidence for this sense is not substantial.
